Student with air pistol prompts lockdown at NVOT

OLD TAPPAN —  Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan was placed in lockdown at approximately 11:30 a.m. Monday after a student reported that another student in the building may have been in possession of a weapon, according to school and police officials.

School administrators immediately implemented safety protocols as law enforcement responded. Agencies on scene included Old Tappan, Northvale, Norwood, Harrington Park, Closter and River Vale police, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and Bergen County SWAT Team.

The student in question was swiftly located, apprehended, and taken into custody. Authorities determined the student was in possession of a CO2 air pistol.

Following the apprehension, a Bergen County K-9 unit conducted a sweep of the building. Shortly before 1 p.m., the school was deemed safe and the lockdown was lifted.

Counseling services were made available to students, with additional support to be provided as needed.

“We want to thank the responding local police departments, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and Bergen County SWAT Team who responded in such a professional and decisive manner,” Superintendent James Santana said in a statement. “We also want to commend our students and staff for their exemplary cooperation in following the district’s lockdown procedures during this high-stress event.”

Officer in Charge Kathryn Weaver said the “rapid response” by local and county partners ensured the situation was resolved safely and efficiently. She said a thorough investigation has been completed and the student will be charged with threat- and weapon-related offenses.

District and police officials also emphasized the importance of reporting concerns, noting the incident underscores the value of the “see something, say something” approach.
