Old Tappan, New Jersey—Police from eight communities converged to arrest a man accused of assaulting and threatening to kill victims of an Orangeburgh Road burglary during the early morning hours of July 12.

Garth C. Mackinnon, 26, of Piermont, New York, was apprehended by River Vale police after a brief pursuit; he’s being held at Bergen County Jail without bail on charges including first degree attempted murder, records show.

Police first responded to an emergency caller reporting a burglary in progress at their home, Old Tappan Police Chief Thomas M. Shine told Northern Valley Press.

As Patrol Officers Jason Rothenburger and Thomas Nugent responded to the Orangeburgh Road home, the caller reported a shirtless male was fleeing the residence northbound in the area of Chestnut Avenue being chased by a family member.

“Upon arrival, patrols found a victim with obvious injuries about the head and neck area and requiring medical assistance,” said Shine. “The victim advised patrols that the suspect stated he was going to kill them and identified the suspect as Garth Mackinnon. The suspect was known to the victim.”

Officers set out looking for the suspect: described as a white male with no shirt, tattoos on his chest and rib cage, blue gym shorts, sneakers and carrying a back pack.

Responding officers came from the River Vale, Northvale, Norwood, Harrington Park, Closter, Haworth and Demarest police departments.

“A search perimeter was established and within a short period of time River Vale Sgt. Dino Dinelli and [Officer] Daniel Kristan reported having apprehended the described suspect in the area of Wilbur Road and Haring Drive,” said Shine. “The suspect identified as Garth Mackinnon was taken into custody without incident and transported to Old Tappan Police Headquarters for processing.”

Shine said Mackinnon was charged with aggravated assault, burglary, and possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes—all second degree charges. Sheriff’s department records also show he is being charged with first degree attempted murder.

The victim was transported by ambulance to Hackensack University Medical Center in Westwood to be treated for the injuries, Shine said.
