OLD TAPPAN, N.J.—Dozens of friends, family and fellow officers—including officers from nearby towns—offered congratulations for newly sworn-in Old Tappan Police Department Capt. Joseph Tracy at the June 17 Borough Council meeting.

“He is a dedicated, hardworking officer with an excellent work ethic, and will go out of his way to help anyone. He has been very successful working within the Juvenile Division and still keeps in touch with students and adults that he had helped through some bad experiences,” said Police Chief Thomas Shine.

“Capt. Tracy has taken on his new role as second in command of the Old Tappan Police Department and is looking forward to accepting his new administrative responsibilities with the same pride and enthusiasm,” said Shine.

Tracy joined the police department in August 1988 after he attended the New Jersey State Police Academy for Municipal Police Officers initial training.

He served as a patrol officer from 1988 through 2003 when he was promoted to detective.

He served as a detective through 2012 and was promoted to detective-sergeant in 2012. In 2017, he was promoted to lieutenant.

Tracy received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Bergen Community College. He and his wife, Lisa, have a son and daughter.

Tracy’s salary as police captain is $152,326. As a lieutenant, Tracy made $140,208. The Old Tappan Police Department consists of 14 officers, including Chief Shine.
