Westwood weighs outdoor dining, recycling, solar plans, and filming ordinance May 6

Westwood Borough Hall

WESTWOOD, N.J.— The Westwood Mayor and Council will meet on Tuesday, May 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. with a closed session, followed by the public meeting at 7:30 at Borough Hall, 101 Washington Ave.

During the closed session, officials are expected to discuss potential property acquisition, the status of the borough tax assessor’s tenure, legal matters related to zoning and recreation ordinances, and other attorney-client privileged items.

The public session includes several items for council discussion, ranging from a proposed community solar initiative and a review of local speed limits to possible changes to loading zones, “grab and go” parking areas, and Lafayette Avenue parking regulations. Updates to the borough’s recycling practices and filming ordinance — timely, as downtown hosted a Netflix production company this week — are also on the table, along with a communication policy for the Westwood Police Department and Westwood Volunteer Fire Department.

Proposed zoning amendments in the Central Business District/Special Planning Environment (CBD/SPE) Zone will be reviewed, and Ordinance 25-14, which would update outdoor dining regulations, is scheduled for introduction.

Three ordinances are scheduled for adoption:

  • 25-11, appropriating $6,000 from the Recreation Trust Fund for new dugouts at Westvale Field.
  • 25-12, a bond ordinance totaling $1.045 million for public improvements and equipment acquisition, with a contribution from the Borough of Emerson.
  • 25-13, appropriating $30,000 from the borough’s Capital Surplus Fund for a new telephone system.

More than a dozen resolutions are expected to be acted on as part of a consent agenda. These include:

  • Adjustments to salaries for two police officers,
  • Authorization to auction surplus property via GovDeals,
  • Approval for the Westwood Heritage Society to host craft shows in Veterans’ Park,
  • Acceptance of opioid settlement funds,
  • Support for restoring energy tax funding to municipalities,
  • Contracts for park upgrades, dump truck conversion, and communications infrastructure.

The borough engineer will also present a biweekly report. A public forum is scheduled prior to council action on ordinances. The meeting is open to the public.
