TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON—Local police are alerting residents to an attempted burglary that occurred on the evening of Dec. 18. At approximately 8:47 p.m., officers responded to a call from a residence on the west side of town after a homeowner’s security camera system detected a suspicious individual possibly attempting to gain entry to the home.

Police conducted a thorough search of the area but were unable to locate the suspect. Images captured by the homeowner’s security system show the individual in question. Out of respect for the privacy of the homeowner, police did not disclose the specific address where the footage was recorded.

“As a department, we strive to provide the community with as much information as possible while also balancing the need to respect the privacy of potential victims,” said a police representative.

The department also reminded residents that home burglaries tend to increase during the winter months, particularly over the holiday season when longer periods of darkness provide cover for criminal activity. Residents are encouraged to take proactive measures to secure their homes and vehicles.

Tips to Prevent Burglaries:

  • Lock all doors, windows, and gates, even when at home.
  • Secure vehicles and avoid leaving keys inside.
  • Use light timers to give the appearance of an occupied home when away.
  • Stop or redirect deliveries if you plan to be out of town.

The police department emphasized the importance of community awareness and diligence in preventing burglaries. Anyone with questions, concerns, or information about the incident is urged to contact the Township of Washington Police Desk at 201-664-1140.
