Celebrating the season in Demarest

Demarest’s holiday tree towered over local residents attending the annual tree lighting event.

DEMAREST, N.J. —— On Tuesday, Dec. 5, approximately 200 Demarest residents, and almost 150 youngsters, braved on and off rain to watch in awe as the annual Christmas tree lighting took place. The annual event featured an appearance by Santa Claus, who came bearing candy canes for kids of all ages.

With assistance from many local agencies and helpers, including three in particular, two local residents have been pulling together the local tree lighting for at least 25 years. David and Jackie Fulin have been instrumental to organizing the annual event, said borough clerk Susan Crosman.

Jackie Fulin said three helpers, Jen Anavim, and Caleb and Noah Woods-Bannon, were a big part of the event’s success. Fulin said her husband also served as deejay/ emcee at the event, which was attended by the mayor and many local officials. “Despite the inclement weather, we thank all of the children and parents for coming out and enjoying the night with Santa and all the festivities,” said Jackie Fulin.

Added Mayor Ray Cywinski: “Despite the weather everybody had a great time, everybody did a great job. A little snow instead of rain would have really set the mood.”
