ENGLEWOOD POLICE: Neighbor Helps Stop Knife Attack; Suspect in Custody, Victim ‘Expected to Pull Through’

ENGLEWOOD, N.J.—On July 1 at around 8:22 p.m., a 911 dispatcher received a call that a female Englewood resident had been stabbed, according to Deputy Chief of Police Gregory Halstead.

The victim’s ex-boyfriend—37-year-old Ernesto Dominguez-Hortelano—arrived at her home on Mattlage Place, claiming he was going to pick up a package, said Halstead. The residents were reluctant to let the man enter the home; however, he forced his way into the apartment, sparking a struggle that moved out onto the front porch, Halstead said.

The man then reached for a knife he had been carrying and proceeded to stab the victim, puncturing her lungs and forearm, Halstead said.

A neighbor who witnessed the incident stopped the attack with the help of children who were present by jumping onto the man, picking up the knife, and chasing him off, according to Halstead.

Officers arrived on the scene and were notified of the direction the man had fled. Officer Maciej Mlynaryk and Officer Fabian Gallego searched the area on foot, ultimately locating the attacker who was hiding in a shed attached to a garage behind 24 Brookway Ave. The man was then taken into custody, according to Halstead.

The victim was immediately treated on the scene by Officer Dona Nidelko and Officer Dylan Donegan who applied pressure to her wounds to stop the bleeding and assisted emergency medical personnel who arrived on scene shortly after. She was rushed to Englewood Hospital where she is expected to recover, said Halstead.

The investigation is still ongoing. However, Dominguez-Hortelano preliminarily is being charged with attempted murder, armed burglary, unlawful possession of a weapon, three counts of endangering the welfare of minors, and resisting arrest among other charges, according to Halstead.
