TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, N.J. — A Georgia man was arrested Sept. 20 after police found a loaded handgun during an early morning traffic stop on Linwood Avenue, according to Township Police.
An officer stopped a vehicle towing a boat trailer without a license plate at approximately 4 a.m. While speaking with the driver, the officer saw what appeared to be the butt of a firearm inside the vehicle, police said. Officers subsequently identified the weapon as a loaded Ruger semi-automatic pistol.
The driver, William Bradley Smith, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and issued multiple motor vehicle summonses. He was lodged in the Bergen County Jail.
Police said the firearm had not been reported stolen at the time of the investigation.
The charges are allegations. Smith is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
