HAWORTH, N.J.—The Haworth 5K Run/Walk returns Saturday, Sept. 19, for what organizers say will be the community event’s 17th running.
The 3.1-mile race will begin at 9:30 a.m. at 142 Terrace St. It is open to runners and walkers, combining a competitive championship field with a community race intended for the broader public.
The event traces its beginnings to spring 2009, when a small group of local volunteers formed the Haworth Road Runners’ Association with the goal of bringing a 5K back to the borough.
From the start, organizers wanted the course to showcase Haworth’s picturesque streets, small-town character and community spirit. They also wanted the race to benefit the organizations and causes serving Haworth and its neighbors.
Organizers say the event has raised more than $300,000 for local organizations and causes since it began.
This year’s race will serve as the USA Track & Field New Jersey Masters Championships for men and women. Eligible USATF-NJ runners can earn up to 700 Grand Prix points.
The championship designation does not limit the field to USATF members. The race remains open to all, although runners must be USATF-NJ members to qualify for the championship prize money.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in the men’s and women’s open and masters divisions. First-place finishers will receive $250, followed by $150 for second place and $50 for third. Prize money will be distributed by mail after the results become official.
The event also offers an incentive for runners pursuing the fastest times in race history. A separate $250 prize is available to any man or woman who breaks the applicable overall course record. USATF-NJ membership is not required for the course-record awards.
Organizers also plan a post-race gathering featuring food, drinks and music, extending the event beyond the finish line.
Advance registration is $35 through Sept. 17, with a $3 discount for USATF members. Race-day registration is $45.
