Tenafly, New Jersey — On April 10, a contractor alerted Tenafly police to a burglary to a residential home on Knickerbocker Road that had taken place sometime in the past.
Detectives responded and determined that the home was under construction, and an unknown suspect made entry through a rear door sometime in the recent past. Detectives from the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department processed the scene for evidence and fingerprints. The homeowner was not immediately available and unable to provide a list of stolen items that day.
On Wednesday, April 11, Tenafly police detectives met with the resident to determine what was missing. While checking the area around the main home, Detective Sgt. Wayne Hall located an individual sleeping in a separate garage apartment at the rear of the property. The suspect, later identified as Nicholas Maziot, 27, of Bayville, was taken into custody. A crack pipe and evidence of drug use was also discovered during Maziot’s arrest.
Based upon the police investigation, it appears that Maziot is homeless and had been illegally entering the garage apartment at night while the home was under construction.
During this time, Maziot entered the residence and searched through bedrooms and storage areas for valuables. After searching the house, the homeowner was able to provide a list of missing items, including jewelry, clothing and a bicycle frame with a total value over $75,000.
Maziot was charged with two counts of burglary, criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property, and possession of drug paraphernalia. In addition, it was determined that Maziot had four active warrants from several local jurisdictions.
After being processed, Maziot was transported to the Bergen County Jail to await a bail hearing. Detectives are actively investigating the whereabouts of the stolen items.
