Englewood, New Jersey — On April 9 at about 4:30 a.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Tenafly Road on a report of a burglary-in-progress to a residential structure under construction.

Upon arrival, Officer Chris Formisano heard someone climbing over a nearby fence as other officers found evidence of a break-in and theft.

Within moments, an additional Officer, Gregory Smith, located a suspect hiding in some shrubbery on nearby Cambridge Avenue. Willie Edward Carter, 50, of Englewood, was immediately taken into custody on an outstanding and unrelated Bergen County Superior Court arrest warrant.

Detectives from Englewood and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Unit were called and investigated the case further, which included locating, identifying and retrieving forensic evidence.

Carter was later charged with burglary, theft and possession of burglary tools. He was later remanded to the Bergen County Jail to await a detention hearing in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.

The case will be referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office for further disposition.
