Spring Offers Plenty To Do at Tenafly Nature Center

Right now, the Tenafly Nature Center is teaching the process and history of maple sugaring.

TENAFLY, N.J.—There’s plenty of fun and interesting things to do this spring at Tenafly Nature Center.

Maple Sugaring: Sundays, March 17 and 24, at 12:30, 2 and 3:30 p.m. Join a TNC naturalist to learn about the history and process of Maple Sugaring.

Seasonal Scavenger Hunt: Saturdays, April 13 and May 11 from 2 to 3 p.m. Families will be given a list of prompts and clues to follow as children explore the forest in a brains-on learning experience for the whole family.

Pancake Brunch and Maple Sugaring: Sunday, March 31. Tours leave every 30 minutes between 10:30 a.m. and noon. Join a TNC naturalist to learn about the history and process of maple sugaring. After your tour, there will be a pancake brunch served in the covered pavilion by our TNC’s executive director.

Lost Brook Trail Race: Saturday, April 6. Check in at 7:45 a.m. race starts at 9 a.m. Discover the natural terrain of the Lost Brook Preserve. Experience sections of the trail as you navigate over roots, rocks and streams, through Tenafly Nature Center’s nearly 400 acres of wetlands and hardwood forest. All proceeds will support TNC’s mission to protect open space on and off the trails and to provide environmental education programs.

Primitive Tool Making (Knapping): Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. Shaping rocks into beautiful and functional tools is a fun and challenging skill that has been practiced for millennia. In this introductory course, participants will start to learn the basic techniques of pressure flaking—which is the shaping/sharpening stones into useful tools or points. All participants will leave with their own tool kit, in order to continue experimenting at home. All materials provided. For adults and teens ages 14+ only. In the event of inclement weather program is held under cover.

• Forest Bathing and Tibetan Gong Sound Healing: Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Forest Bathing, or Shinrin-Yoku, is a guided meditation practice that uses the forest to help participants shed the stress of modern life. Forest Bathing does not involve any physical bathing, but a mental bath in a serene forested environment designed to help you slow down, de-stress and reconnect to your natural self. This combination of practices is unique to the Tenafly Nature Center.
