Following the crash, Washington Avenue (County Road 502) was immediately blocked off by Washington Township police, assisted by officers from Westwood and Hillsdale, said Washington Township Police Department Captain Gregg Hackbarth.

Detours remained in effect through Friday night.

He said PSE&G estimated the road would remain closed to traffic until 9:30 or 10:30 p.m. Friday. Hackbarth said the driver – whose name he declined to release – is charged with DWI, reckless driving, and operating an uninsured vehicle. He said additional charges may be pending.

The driver was taken to New Bridge Medical Center, Paramus, following the accident.

Hackbarth said the driver appeared to receive minor injuries in the crash, which caused the vehicle’s air bag to deploy, said Hackbarth.

He said no sobriety tests were administered at the accident scene, though an odor of alcoholic beverage could be detected.

The Lexus came to rest on a lawn, which caused minor damage to one property’s lawn and landscaping, said Hackbarth.
