TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON — Sophia Emmanouilidis, an eighth-grader at Westwood Regional Middle School, has qualified for the USRowing Mid-Atlantic Championships, set for May 9–10 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor.
Sophia, a novice rower representing Nereid Boat Club of Rutherford, earned qualification after helping her crew capture a silver-medal finish in the Girls Under-17 4+ at the Cooper Cup Regatta in April.

Qualifying for regionals in her first year of racing is a notable accomplishment, particularly in the Mid-Atlantic region, considered one of the most competitive youth rowing regions in the country.
Sophia’s older sister, Alexandra Emmanouilidis, a freshman at Westwood Regional High School, also will compete at the championships as a novice athlete with Nereid Boat Club, rowing in the Novice 4x event.
Nereid Boat Club is nationally recognized for strong performances at major regattas, including the USRowing Youth National Championships and the Head of the Charles Regatta.
The Mid-Atlantic Championships serve as a qualifying regatta for the USRowing Youth National Championships, scheduled for June 11–14 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
Sophia and Alexandra are residents of the Township of Washington.
