Westwood Man Charged With Hindering Apprehension Following New Year’s Day Assault

HILLSDALE, N.J.—A Westwood man is charged with hindering apprehension after Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of Juan Fernandez of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., over aggravated assault.

Calo said Alex Z. Green, 22, unemployed or a student, residing on Goodwin Terrace in Westwood, drove the car that whisked Fernandez away from The Cornerstone in Hillsdale in the first hour of 2019 after Fernandez allegedly assaulted a victim, leaving him with a severe head injury.

The victim was transported to a hospital in critical condition and remained hospitalized as of Jan. 7.

Green was arrested in Westwood Jan. 2 and is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on Jan. 16.

Fernandez, also listed as 22 and “unemployed/student,” was arrested Jan. 4 in Paramus and charged with one count of aggravated assault. He is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on Jan. 23.

Calo thanked the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office and the Hillsdale and Ridgewood police departments for their assistance in this investigation.
