TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, N.J.—The mayor and Township Council offered their somber thanks to first responders several hours after a sedan collided with an SUV, struck a telephone pole, and rolled over, losing its roof, in a Tuesday afternoon wreck that killed a 69-year-old driver from Rockland.
The vehicles, a Honda Accord and Hyundai Santa Fe, collided on Linwood Avenue near Parkway Court, police Capt. Richard Skinner said.
The Honda driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, 40, from Bergen County, was shaken but not reported injured.
Skinner said the Bergen County Medical Examiner’s Office responded along with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Fatal Accident Investigations Unit, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau, and first responders from here and Paramus.
According to WTPD Detective Heather Castronova, the mishap was “a freak accident” that would have resulted in no summonses or tickets.
“Nobody’s really at fault. … It’s a sad situation all around,” she told Pascack Press Sept. 5.
The governing body expressed its gratitude to the emergency workers at their regular meeting at Town Hall. On the agenda was an update on options for police radios.
