TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON—The Township of Washington Police Department has concluded a thorough investigation into disturbing incidents that played out just after Westwood Regional High School graduated the Class of 2024.
According to WTPD Cpl. Chris Osenbruck in a statement on June 27, video footage was reviewed, interviews were conducted, and the involved parties were identified. The investigation determined that the melees, June 20, involved two graduating students and their families.
As a result, 25 charges have been filed against 13 individuals. The charges include:
- NJSA 2C:12-1A(1) – Assault
- NJSA 2C:33-2A(1) – Disorderly Conduct
- NJSA 2C:33-1B – Failure to Disperse
- NJSA 2C:29-1A – Obstruction
The Township of Washington Police Department said it is aware that several videos of the incident are circulating on social media. The event made the evening broadcast news.
Police Chief John Calamari emphasized that these charges are merely accusations and that the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
In “Charges pending as Westwood Regional 2024 grad ceremony marred by violence” (Pascack Press, June 21, 2024), we quoted the police taking a wider view:
“Unfortunately, this type of behavior is becoming more common. As we work to prosecute those responsible, it’s a good opportunity to speak to your children, family members, and friends about appropriate behavior. If you witness an issue, call the police. If a situation becomes dangerous, leave immediately and follow police instructions,” the WTPD said.
Multiple agencies assisted in dispersing the crowds. The Washington Township Police Department expressed gratitude to the Hillsdale, Westwood, Old Tappan, Oradell, Emerson, River Vale, Waldwick, Ho-Ho-Kus, Ridgewood, Paramus, and Bergen County Sheriff’s departments. They also thanked the Washington Township Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Westwood Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and River Vale Volunteer Ambulance Corps for their assistance with the injured.
