The Hillsdale Free Public Library invites the community to explore two exhibits on display throughout June, highlighting both local artistic talent and a nostalgic look back at America’s Bicentennial celebration.
In the Meeting Room Gallery, visitors can enjoy Woodwork by Wheez, featuring the work of local artist Rick Wieser, known as “The Wheez.” A retired engineer and self-taught woodworker, Wieser has spent more than 50 years working with wood, first building furniture and home additions and later creating whimsical folk-art pieces from reclaimed materials. His collection includes building facades, lighthouses, colorful fish, carved whales, birdhouses and other creations inspired by his imagination.
In the glass display cases in the library lobby, visitors can also experience Bicentennial Memories, an exhibit of memorabilia and ephemera from America’s Bicentennial celebration curated by local collector Gary Weir. A longtime Hillsdale resident, Weir began collecting Bicentennial souvenirs as a teenager in 1976. His collection includes books, newspapers, magazines, commemorative items and other keepsakes that capture the spirit of the era.

As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, the exhibit offers a nostalgic glimpse of how Americans marked the country’s 200th birthday 50 years ago.
“We are delighted to offer these two fascinating exhibits that celebrate both creativity and history,” Library Director Dave Franz said. “Rick Wieser’s handcrafted artwork demonstrates the power of imagination and craftsmanship, while Gary Weir’s Bicentennial collection provides a wonderful opportunity to revisit an important moment in our nation’s history. We encourage everyone to stop by the library this June and take time to explore both exhibits.”
Both exhibits will be on display throughout June during regular library hours at the Hillsdale Free Public Library, 509 Hillsdale Ave.
