PARK RIDGE, N.J. —— The Boy Scouts of Troop 80 earned a borough’s thanks after turning in an excellent job power-washing the benches and monuments at Veterans Park in the run-up to this year’s 9/11 ceremony.

In presenting the boys community service awards at the council meeting of Nov. 28, Mayor Keith Misciagna said they had stepped up to spiff up the site following a rec summer concert, at which some observed the weathered state of the benches and monuments.

The boys, under Scout Master Steve Masson, immediately agreed to take on the work, and Sept. 3 saw to it.

They are Brian Friedlander, Thomas Hopper, Vigen Hovhanissyam, Dylan Masson, Steven Masson, and Evan Shein.

At the same meeting, Misciagna and Fire Chief Thomas Derienzo Jr. swore in Volunteer Fire Department Member Jay P. D’Elia II.

In welcoming D’Elia, Derienzo noted, “We’ve been very lucky the last couple of months; we’ve put on a few extra people, which is nice, and on Friday night we’re graduating at least three members from the Bergen County Fire Academy, so three more active members of the department.”

He said new members were always welcome. Noting the young people in the room, Derienzo said that “We start at age 14. Fourteen to 17 is a reserve member, and at 18 you become a regular member of the department.”
