BACK IN TIME: Holiday shopping in Emerson, 1975

With the month of gift-giving now upon us, ’tis the season for holiday flea markets and craft shows. One such event that was beloved by many was the annual Winter Wonderland fair that took took place for years at Assumption School in Emerson.

Emerson native and freelance photographer Thomas Moorhead captured the photograph above back in 1975. The event featured food, crafts, raffles, posing for photographs with Santa Claus and, of course, a plant sale as shown here.

Assumption Academy, once a Catholic grammar school, opened in 1953 and taught thousands of children in grades kindergarten through eight for 60 years. Citing declining enrollment, the Jefferson Avenue school ceased its elementary education program in 2012. It reopened as an early childhood development center for children in pre-K and kindergarten.
