HILLSDALE, N.J. — Kings Food Markets will close its Hillsdale supermarket, at Washington Avenue and Broadway, no later than Jan. 2, 2027, as the store’s lease comes to an end, a company spokeswoman told reporters Monday.
The popular location is one of two Kings stores in New Jersey slated to close. The other is in White House Station in Hunterdon County. The company disclosed the planned layoffs Friday in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN, notice filed with the state.
“We announced plans to close the Kings Food Markets locations in Hillsdale and White House Station, New Jersey,” Albertsons Supermarkets spokeswoman Dana Ward told reporters Monday. “These locations will close no later than Jan. 2, 2027.”
The two closings could affect as many as 122 employees. The company said it will attempt to place affected workers at other stores.
Asked why the locations are closing, Ward pointed to the expiration of their leases.
“Like all retailers, we regularly evaluate our store portfolio and real estate footprint to ensure we are best positioned to serve customers and operate efficiently,” she said. “With the lease for these locations coming to an end, we made the decision to focus our resources on other locations.”
Kings currently operates 16 stores in New Jersey.
“Our goal is to place as many associates as possible in other stores. Our Human Resources and Labor Relations Teams will be working diligently with each affected associate and his or her labor union to find other work, wherever possible, that is consistent with the applicable law or labor agreement,” Ward said.
She added, “Anyone who is unable to secure a job will be eligible for severance in accordance with applicable laws.”
Separately, in 2025 the popular upscale grocer The Fresh Market in Montvale was slated to close, to be replaced by a Trader Joe’s.
