ALPINE, N.J.—A Brooklyn man driving for Uber is now jailed on a charge of sexual assault. The Alpine Police Department assisted in the investigation, which acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced Feb. 27.

According to Calo’s office, Dearan Bennett, 35, single, was the sole focus of an investigation that began Friday, June 1, 2018, when Alpine police responded to a 911 call of a reported sexual assault. It was reported that a woman had just been sexually assaulted by her Uber driver.

As a result of an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit and the Alpine Police Department, Bennett was arrested on Tuesday, Feb. 26 and charged with one count of sexual assault.

Following his first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on Feb. 27, Bennett was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing on Monday, March 4.

Calo said that the charge is merely an accusation and that the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

He thanked the Alpine Police Department for its assistance in the investigation.
