BACK IN TIME: A Changing Corner of Harrington Park

Park Service Station, Schraalenburgh Road and Elm Street, late 1930s or early 1940s.

HARRINGTON PARK, N.J.—There’s been a service station at the corner of Schraalenburgh Road and Elm Street in Harrington Park for as long as anybody can remember.

In fact, it was back in the 1930s that John Alleborn first opened his gas station and garage there. His place is shown during the early years in the photo above. Back then the station sold Sinclair H-C gasoline—the “H-C” stood for Houston Concentrate, an early high-octane fuel.

The corner has housed a gas station ever since, but the building itself has been remodeled and changed hands over time. In recent years the station had been vacant. All the while, the same house stood next door—until recently.

The service station is now on its way out, soon to be replaced by a housing development that will include a group home for disabled persons, affordable housing units, and market rate townhouses.

The old house (to be the site of the townhouses) was recently torn down, and the station (the future site of the group home and affordable units) will soon follow. The photos at right show how this corner looked one year ago (top) and last week (bottom).
