BACK IN TIME: Hillsdale’s grammar school

It was a cold day in Hillsdale when the photograph above was captured on Hillsdale Avenue at Magnolia Avenue.

The main building visible in the photo is the Hillsdale Grammar School, which is on the left side. The school, built in 1889 at the corner of Hillsdale and Magnolia, originally had just four rooms and a single teacher for 36 pupils. In 1906 four more classrooms were added, but continued growth in Hillsdale quickly rendered the school inadequate. A larger grammar school (later named George G. White) was constructed on the property in 1921. Grades one through six were transferred to the new building, while the old building continued to house grades seven and eight through the 1930s. George White, now a middle school, still stands at the location, having been enlarged many times.

Barely visible beyond the school, directly behind where the man is standing, is the original Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Built in 1890, the church building was first located on Park Street by the railroad tracks, but was moved to Hillsdale Avenue in 1894. It served for many years until 1966, when it was torn down and the present-day Holy Trinity was constructed in its place.

The photos below show better views of each of these buildings.
