COMMUNITY VOICES: ‘Re-elect Mayor Rustin,’ Says Writer

To the editor:

My wife and I have been Tenafly residents for about 37 years. Both our sons received their elementary and high school educations in Tenafly Public Schools.

I have been privileged to know Peter Rustin for more than 30 years. I met Peter when he was loading soda cans at the snack bar at the little league field. We proceeded to coach together seven biddy basketball and little league teams and became friends. My wife and I gladly supported Peter in his first campaign for mayor in 2003 and have continued to support him ever since.

Peter devotes his full time and attention to being mayor of Tenafly. He is constantly on-call to respond to any need. Although not political, he brings guidance and fresh ideas and innovations to the council on a regular basis. His accomplishments include full compliance with tough affordable housing regulations; the “joint use” program, allowing the sharing of services between the borough and the schools; the new municipal field; the “stigma free” committee’ and the televising of all council meetings to ensure transparency.

Peter’s adversary claims to have solutions to “infrastructure,” transportation (commuter jitney) and downtown revitalization issues. These “wish list” issues are beyond the power of any mayor to address, much less resolve.

It’s comforting at this time to have a competent, non-partisan, leader in Tenafly. Re-elect Mayor Rustin!
