Attempted online scam gets kid’s Xbox taken away

A resident and her juvenile son arrived at police headquarters March 23 to report fraudulent activity: The son was playing Fortnite online when he was contacted in-game by someone on his friends list who was offering to “give” him V-Bucks, which is currency in the world of Fortnite.

This person requested the player’s cell phone number and personal identification, which was supplied. The player’s mom got an alert on her phone, and the transaction did not go through.

The family took the son’s Xbox away and cancelled his account. Detectives were made aware of the situation.

Police wait for kids to leave before arresting their dad

Police stopped a New York-registered Mitsubishi Lancer at Kinderkamack and Perry after police saw the driver had an obstructed view through her windshield—a sneaker and an air freshener—and two unsecured children moving around freely inside. There also was an adult male passenger, later identified as the children’s father and of the Bronx.

According to the police report, filed the afternoon of March 23, the driver, also from the Bronx, was flustered and said she had gotten a flat tire on the Tappan Zee Bridge and needed to get to the tire store before it closes.

Her sense of urgency struck the officer as an atypical response. He also detected the strong odor of raw marijuana emanating from the car.

The officer called for backup, and the driver was told that her car would be searched for probable cause. She declined to let the juveniles wait in a patrol car where they would be warm, and she had opened her sunroof, which in the officer’s reported opinion was to allow the odor to dissipate.

A search turned up a clear glassine baggie with raw marijuana and THC-infused candies in the glove compartment. The male passenger said it all belonged to him. After the driver was given her motor vehicle violations (obstructed windows/vision, safety belts required, and possession of controlled dangerous substances in a motor vehicle) and left with the kids, police handcuffed and arrested the father and took him to headquarters.

He was given summonses for possession of marijuana under 50 grams. His court date is April 17.
