CRESSKILL, N.J.—An $800,000 bond ordinance that amends an already existing measure for field improvements to the Merritt Field in Cresskill was approved by the mayor and council last week.

This brings the total costs to improvements for the field, also known as the Margie Avenue Athletic Field, to $2.3 million.

At the March 20 regular council meeting, Mayor Benedict Romeo said that extra funding would cover the cost of a field house and a playground.

The governing body had previously approved an ordinance of $1.5 million toward improvements at the field.

With both measures combined improvements will include a new baseball field, benches, lighting, a parking lot, irrigation system as well as the already mentioned playground and field house.

Romeo said that the project’s costs will be underwritten with $600,000 from the borough’s open space trust fund as well as a recently received $50,000 grant from the Bergen County Open Space Flood Plain Protection, Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust Fund. The mayor said that the borough will also be applying for additional grants.

Piermont Road improvements ordinance introduced

The governing body also introduced an ordinance that would appropriate $175,000 in funds for improvements to a section of Piermont Road.

Borough Clerk Francesca Maragliano said the area where these improvements will take place is from Madison Avenue south to the Tenafly border.

Improvements for that area will include paving, milling, sidewalk repair, curves, and ramps, borough officials said.

A vote to adopt the new ordinance is scheduled for Wednesday, April 3.
