Man strikes cars, injuring pedestrian with mailbox

A man driving a Honda Civic struck three cars legally parked on Jefferson Avenue just before 8 p.m. on March 9, police told Pascack Press. The driver, from Emerson, age, 21, caused a chain reaction that dislodged a big blue mailbox from the sidewalk, where it struck a pedestrian in the stomach, knocking him down. The pedestrian was hospitalized, condition not known at press time. The driver was cited for careless driving.

Headlights off, man found with white powder in pens

An officer on patrol March 9 at approximately 2:30 a.m. reported seeing a Nissan SUV being driven without its headlights on. He pulled the driver over on Washington Avenue by 7th Avenue. As the driver handed his credentials over, the officer observed slow and fumbling hand movements and significantly dilated pupils.

The driver, 35, of Westwood, failed sobriety tests and was arrested. Two pens were found—one on the driver, and one in the SUV—containing a white powdery residue.

The car was impounded. At headquarters, a drug expert concluded the defendant was under the effect of a central nervous system depressant. The defendant was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, drug paraphernalia, DWI, and controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. He got a summons for not using headlights.
